A collection of four vintage nasse, traditional handwoven fishing traps sourced by Richard Christiansen in Puglia. Made from slender lengths of rush and cane, each is constructed as an open lattice around a sculptural, tapering form, with subtle variations in scale, weave, and silhouette.
For generations, fishermen along the coast of southern Italy made these traps by hand, adapting their size and shape according to what they hoped to catch. Their ingenious construction allowed fish to enter through an internal funnel while making escape difficult. In Puglia, the tradition was closely tied to coastal communities and the winter months, when fishermen repaired and wove equipment while away from the water.
Removed from their original function, the four forms become wonderfully architectural objects. Grouped together, their repetition and dramatic differences in scale make them feel almost like a family of woven sculptures.
