Victorian Hope & Carter Green Majolica Geranium Plates, Set of Three
A set of three Victorian majolica plates attributed to Hope & Carter of Burslem, Staffordshire, each molded with an exuberant arrangement of geranium leaves and blossoms beneath a deep green glaze. Made in England in the 1870s, the relief is unusually sculptural, with the glaze pooling in the recesses and catching along the raised petals, veining, and softly scalloped rims.
Each plate is impressed with design number “12” on the reverse, a number associated with this Hope & Carter geranium mold, though the maker’s name itself is not stamped. Displayed together, the repeating botanical pattern has wonderful presence and feels as much like wall-mounted decoration as tableware.
The set includes three matching molded earthenware plates, with age-related wear consistent with 19th-century use.
