Set of Six Vallauris Thistle Plates, Daniel Étienne
Six small plates, each divided by raised lines into radiating compartments, a single thistle rising in the center of every one. The flower head is built up in low relief and glazed in shades of violet and pink, ringed by dark green leaves with the same thick, painterly outline that runs through the divider lines and the plate's turquoise rim. The ground is left pale and slightly textured, the raw clay showing faintly through the glaze.
Daniel Étienne worked in Vallauris on the French Riviera through the 1960s and 70s, the same pottery town that drew Picasso, Roger Capron, and Robert Picault into ceramics in the postwar years. The thistle is his signature motif, repeated across plates, dishes, and cookware, always in this same handmade, slightly uneven register that marks it as studio pottery rather than a factory pattern.
A complete set of six in matching condition and glaze is an unusually cohesive survival.
