A set of five tall-backed chairs built almost entirely from a single dramatic field of figured walnut, each back cut into a stepped, faceted edge on one side — a quiet Cubist gesture set against an otherwise plain rectangular field. Seat rail and leg joints are left visibly expressed rather than concealed, small notched reveals marking where each member meets the next; splayed, gently curved rear legs play off the squared, chamfered lines of the front. Seats reupholstered in a cream spotted fabric, not original. Each chair stamped "A. Sornay."
André Sornay took over his family's Lyon furniture workshop at seventeen and, through the 1920s and '30s, turned it from period reproduction toward a personal geometric modernism that became known locally as "Le Style Sornay." He let construction itself carry the decoration — expressed joinery, patented assembly systems, bold wood grain as the only real ornament. This set's faceted backrest and visible joinery sit squarely within that vocabulary, and the maker's stamp confirms the attribution.
