Sourced by Richard in France in 2020. A standing woman with her arms flung up over her head, incised into the wall of a grogged stoneware vessel and stained with oxide — the whole figure built from repeating marks, chevrons, dots, little rosettes, a comb of lines for her hair.
Roger Capron (1922–2006) moved to Vallauris in 1946 and founded the Atelier Callis there in 1947 with Robert Picault and Jean Derval, at the moment the town was reinventing itself as the centre of French studio ceramics. He spent sixty years there and took the Grand Prix International de la Céramique in 1980.
The interior is divided into three compartments — a vase built for three separate stems rather than one arrangement, which is a very Capron piece of thinking: the sculpture is the point, the function comes second but is not forgotten.
