Six plates, six designs: two fish, four flowering branches, drawn freehand in copper green and iron brown over a crackled white ground. No two are alike, and none feels laboured over.
Robert Picault came south from Paris after the war and, in 1946, founded Atelier Callis in Vallauris with Roger Capron. Jean Derval joined them the following year. Together they became part of the extraordinary generation that transformed Vallauris from a traditional pottery town into one of the great centres of postwar French ceramics.
Picault later established his own pottery and developed the unmistakable palette seen here. Copper and iron oxides supplied the green and brown that run through much of his work, painted with the loose confidence of someone who understood that a fish only needs a few lines to swim.
Picault was also a friend of Picasso, whom he photographed and filmed during their years in Vallauris.
