Deep in the low forests of the Yucatán, our friend and collaborator Gonzalo Samaranch has created a kind of botanical ark called Mestiza de Indias. Together with his wife, Martha Elena Chan Tuz, they tend to 500 acres of dense, balmy jungle. A place of tangled vines, ancient trees, rare botanicals, and the thick green perfume of Mother Nature. Hidden beneath the canopy of trees is an exquisite new varietal of wild Vanilla, and the inspiration for this candle.
Here, Vanilla is allowed to behave as it always has; the vines climb through the native forest, they grow slowly in the shade, surrounded by the wild green life of the jungle. This candle is our ode to Vanilla in full expression: not the confection, but the living plant. The cool flower and the warm, fragrant pod. Tangled vines beneath a heavy green canopy. Juicy fruit and ancient woods grown in damp, mineral earth, warmed by Yucatán sun.
